the color blue has been a staple in my pottery practice since the inception of eve christa ceramics in 2019. potters like myself use cobalt in the form of cobalt carbonate and cobalt oxide. it’s personally my favorite color to work with and loved by many of my wonderful customers. as an artist and a student of life, i recognize my role as a global citizen and my interconnectedness with all life forms. i’ve recently been learning more about the cobalt mining industry after reading the book “Cobalt Red” by Siddharth Kara and looking into various other resources on the topic, which has lead me to the decision to divest my business from this mineral. we artists are fluidly engaged beings, and so instead of averting my eyes from this information and continuing on with business as usual, i choose to find joy in recognizing my power to make change and shift my personal practices when presented with new information. i take this as both a challenge and an honor to align my work with my greatest value of nonviolence.
some information on cobalt mining
* The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) currently produces more than 70% of the world’s cobalt, most of which is used in the production of lithium ion rechargeable batteries. 8% of the total cobalt produced globally is used to create blue in ceramics and pigments.
* the mines are rife with abuses, ranging from human trafficking, child labor, sexual assault, and extremely dangerous working environments resulting in injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. additionally, the mines have caused unprecedented violence and displacement in the region.
* the mines are an environmental catastrophe; ravaging the landscape causing deforestation, water contamination, and species loss.
